Why are Luke & Lorelai so shocked in the new ‘Gilmore Girls’ photo?

With less than three months until “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” premieres on Netflix, we’re looking for spoilers and teasers in any place we can.

TV Line recently supplied fans with an image that is sure to cause speculation, especially considering the shocked looks on the subjects’ faces.

Luke (Scott Patterson) and Lorelai (Lauren Graham) don’t appear to be having a relaxing night out at the Black-White-Read Bookstore/Theater if their expressions in the newly released photo are any indication. We’d call them shocked at best, outraged at worst.

So what could have the long-time couple up in arms in the middle of their movie?

It’s clearly not food related, since they seem to have plenty lying around, and it’s nothing to do with whatever is on screen, seeing as the rest of the patrons are happily zoned out in their own viewing experience.

The fact that Lorelai appears to be on the phone — which we’re pretty sure is strictly forbidden by Kirk (Sean Gunn) in that theater — could mean that they’ve just got some bad or surprising news.

We’re going to rule out the possibility that Lorelai is learning of Richard’s (Edward Herrmann) death, since that would be too sad to handle. More importantly, there’s a definite comical air to this photo that would absolutely not be there for something as sober as a scene revealing Richard’s passing.

That leaves us with the option that it’s Rory (Alexis Bledel) on the phone.

A new development in her life — like moving home or meeting a new guy — could have spurred an out-of-the-blue phone call to her mom, and Lorelai is not one to screen her daughter’s calls, no matter where she is.

Luke is also pointing to himself in the photo, leaving us to wonder what this call has to do with him. Maybe Rory has finally bumped into Jess (Milo Ventimiglia) again after all these years and is calling Lorelai, and Luke by extension, to tell her about it.

Amy Sherman-Palladino revealed at the 2016 TCA Press Tour that Rory will be struggling a bit in the revival with a perplexing sense of failure she feels with her life. In a situation like that, who is the first person you think she’d call? Duh, Lorelai.

Whoever is on that phone, and whatever their news is, we’re dying to find out all about it.

“Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” premieres Nov. 25 at 12 a.m. PT/3 a.m. ET on Netflix.
