Just finished a TV binge? Netflix already knows your next step

Highlight on New Movie Released DVD

While Netflix may be the reigning king of the streaming entertainment world, the company is notoriously secretive about just how many people are watching its programming. While outside groups have claimed to crack the code to determine Netflix’s ratings, there’s really no telling how spot-on they are.

Just in time for the end of the year, Netflix is releasing a little bit of a look into the average customer — particularly those that love to binge. First and foremost, the streaming giant says that after binging an entire TV series, 59% of users take a break from finding a new show for about three days. After all, you need time to find the perfect followup series.

During that time, Netflix reveals that 61% of those taking a break watch a movie. That’s where the date gets interesting, as the company has tracked what films they tune into.

For instance, “Gilmore Girls” fans who finish watching “A Year in the Life” kept the good feelings going by watching titles like “Dirty Dancing” and “Sixteen Candles.” Meanwhile, many viewers opted to watch Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” after finishing a binge of “Breaking Bad.”

That’s how most of Netflix’s findings go, with viewers opting to watch a movie with a similar tone to whatever show they watch — from “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” leading into the quirky “The Princess Bride” to “Orange Is the New Black” viewers partaking in the equally dark, cynical and comedic “Big Short.”

There is one genre that causes viewers to seek out something different though: Horror. According to Netflix, viewers who watch shows like “Stranger Things” and “American Horror Story” are more likely to watch movies like “Zootopia” and “Mean Girls” after their binge.

Who doesn’t want to escape to a world populated by adorable animals after a trip to the Upside Down? Of course, they might also want to escape there when they realize just how closely Netflix is paying attention to their viewing habits. It’s practically a “Black Mirror”…Which, coincidentally, leads to people watching “Hot Girls Wanted” — a documentary about young women who wind up in the sex trade. So there’s that.
