‘Legion’s’ Season 2 renewal has us hoping for more scary Aubrey Plaza

FX just released the exciting news (on Wednesday, Mar. 15) that Noah Hawley’s visionary Marvel Comics-related series “Legion” will be returning for a second season.

David Haller’s (Dan Stevens) journey into madness has gotten more surreal and frightening as the story has progressed — and lately, we’ve found ourselves firmly focused on the surprisingly frightening conundrum that is Lenny Busker (Aubrey Plaza).

Melanie Bird’s (Jean Smart) team at Summerland all have a clear-cut motive in this story: To rescue David from himself, to help save all mutantkind from extinction. And as we’ve been given a deeper look into each of these fascinating characters, the outlier has been Lenny’s constant presence.

It wasn’t until Episode 5 that we finally got a peek behind the curtain — her real parasitic identity pointing to classic Marvel comics lore, implying that the yellow-eyed beast may be the Shadow King Amahl Farouk, possessing David for his own purposes — and while Wednesday’s (March 15) episode dives even deeper into the psychotic world of Lenny (aka Benny, aka David’s dog King, aka the World’s Angriest Boy in the World), we’re left with so many questions.

We’re pretty sure the Summerland crew won’t be locked away in this Clockworks-inspired purgatory forever. But given the crazy powers this Lenny monster has revealed, we have a feeling the series is just getting started — Shadow King or not, there’s a lot more to come.

A cliffhanger would be very on-brand for Hawley, in the Mar. 29 Season 1 finale — but either way, we’ll be hoping for more time with, and information about, the absolutely terrifying Aubrey Plaza: Lenny’s slow-burn villainy has been a highlight of this season, putting her on a level with TV monsters like Killer Bob from “Twin Peaks” or Mads Mikkelsen’s “Hannibal.”

Whatever direction the show goes regarding this possible Shadow King incursion, we can only hope the show keeps this particular human face around as long as possible — no matter how evil things get, Aubrey Plaza will always be compulsively watchable, and this is absolutely some of her finest work.

“Legion” airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX. Season 2 is set to premiere in 2018.
