Negan has a traitor in his crew on ‘The Walking Dead’ and it’s about time

Highlight on New Movie Released DVD

We’ve been saying throughout Season 7 that there was a weak link in the Saviors and finally it’s come to pass. With war brewing, “The Walking Dead” has given Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his group a surprising new ally and it’s a defection we can’t help but love.

Dwight (Austin Amelio) claims he has left Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) behind and he now wants to aid in taking him down. Is he telling the truth? A look at the evidence would certainly suggest so.

When taking him under his wing, Negan also took Dwight’s wife Cherry (Christine Evangelista), claiming her as his own, and burned his face — he was given a top spot in Negan’s crew, but had to do so without the love of his life.

Throughout the season, Dwight has been seen wavering in his belief that life as a Savior was the only way to be. When Sherry made her escape from the group, secretly leaving him a note, part of us wondered if he’d simply kill himself to escape the grief his choices have brought him. Now though, it seems he’s taken a very different approach to getting out from under Negan’s thumb. And honestly? We think it’s the right choice for everyone involved.

Dwight is exactly what Rick and company needs to get the upper hand on Negan. Nobody knows the Saviors of the Sanctuary as well as him and he’s got just as much of a reason to take out the demented community leader as anyone. Negan has ruined his life far more than a zombie apocalypse ever could. Now, after all of his misdeeds, he’s looking for revenge and penance.

Our heroes may have been able to gather the people and guns it’s going to take to oppose the Saviors but it’s the insider information Dwight can provide that’s going to really bring Negan down. The only question is whether the group will trust him long enough to hear what he has to say.

Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail, and they’ll milk Dwight for all he’s worth. Perhaps then he’ll find a bit of peace with all of the awful things he’s done. First, though, Rick has to put his gun away — which is something he’s not all that good at.

“The Walking Dead” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
