‘The Originals’: The Hollow is here and it has some very unexpected help

Highlight on New Movie Released DVD

Since being brought back from whatever version of hell they were stuck in between Seasons 3 and 4, the Mikaelson clan just can’t catch a break. That was taken a step further in the season’s fourth episode, “Keepers of the House” (April 7), when the Mikaelsons teamed with Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) and Vincent (Yusuf Gatewood) to finally destroy the big bad — which we now know is an evil spirit called the Hollow — only to end up in an even worse situation.

While this group of what passes for heroes in New Orleans believes they’ve vanquished the Hollow, with Detective Will Kinney (Jason Dohring) among those killed in the battle, that actually played right into its hands. Now Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Marcel are seemingly under its control, much in the same way Will was.

What this means for the rest of the season is anyone’s guess — but it doesn’t bode well for Hope (Summer Fontana). Two of the people sworn to protect her now view her as a vessel to be sacrificed. What’s worse, one of those people is her father.

What’s interesting is the Hollow exists to keep vampires from ruling over New Orleans with little regard for the witches. “The city belongs to everyone,” someone under its control says in the episode. By having it possess two of the most powerful vampires in the city, it’s going to take everyone joining together to stop it.

As of now, a witch — Vincent — stands with the Mikaelsons against it. All Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) needs to do is call in some of her fellow werewolves, and the city truly will belong to everyone… It just won’t be how the Hollow envisioned it.

The irony that it will take a united New Orleans to defeat a spirit that wants a united New Orleans would be funny — if the Hollow weren’t so horrifying.

“The Originals” airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the CW.
