'Man of Steel' Sequel on Its Way…Eventually

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Most everyone who saw Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had to admit that Ben Affleck’s Batman stole the movie from Henry Cavill’s Superman. In part, that was by design, since Batman’s older, angrier new persona needed to be established to pave the way for the creation of the Justice League. Also, the movie needed to distinguish Affleck’s Batman from the very fine portrayal of the character embodied by Christian Bale in Christopher Nolan’s popular trilogy.

Where did that leave Superman, though? After the destructive events depicted in Man of Steel, as well as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Superman was left humbled and contrite. He ended up teaming with Batman and Wonder Woman to defeat a powerful common foe, though the conclusion of the movie left his fate up in the air.

Unless, that is, you’ve ever read a superhero comic book series or watched a superhero movie. Superman has already been rebooted multiple times, after all, so the question became when, not if, he would return, beyond his touted appearance in the forthcoming Justice League.

Back in April, actor Henry Cavill, director Zack Snyder and producer Charles Roven all hinted that the character would be returning for his own solo movie. Now comes confirmation via The Wrap that a sequel to Man of Steel is in active development. An unidentified source says: “Superman is a top priority for the studio and getting the character right for audiences is of tantamount importance.”

Warner Bros. already has a heathy slate of DC superhero movies on their release schedule. Wonder Woman is due on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017, The Flash on March 16, 2018 and Aquaman on July 27, 2018. The studio has also scheduled superhero movies on October 5, 2018 and November 1, 2019, without giving away any titles.

One of those, though, is presumed to be the Batman solo movie, which will star Ben Affleck. So it seems likey that the earliest we’ll be seeing Superman in his own solo movie will be 2019. We’ll have to wait and see to find out when we can see another adventure that revolves entirely around mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent and his alter ego, Superman.
