Marvel Studios Countdown: Everything You Need to Know About Marvel Movies at SDCC

News from Marvel’s panel in San Diego was hitting the internet faster than we could hit refresh. We got you covered on the television side, and now in one handy-dandy post is the rest – all of the movie news, casting, and announcements that Marvel dropped last week. Hopefully, this will keep you daydreaming until Marvel’s next big bombshells.

Marvel Studios Has All New Fanfare!

Instead of playing up the brand name alone, Marvel has tinkered with their studio intro credit to focus on their characters. The original fanfare, composed by Brian Tyler, has been replaced by a new composition from Michael Giacchino (Star Trek, Up). While the new intro works fine, the long-running one focused on the rustling flips of comic book pages and glimpses of comics that reminded you immediately of the roots of the film you were about to watch. We liked that reminder.

Doctor Strange, Coming November 4, 2016

A second trailer was released for Doctor Strange, revealing the folding cities from the first trailer to not just be a special effects backdrop but a place where action sequences are staged. Marvel had so many announcements, they were still able to keep a lot of Doctor Strange under wraps, but director Scott Derrickson did tell ComicBook.com that the film opens up the idea of a “Marvel Cinematic Multiverse.” We won’t hold our breath for an X-Men or Fantastic Four cameo (yet?), but the mind reels.

What Can I Read Until Then? Marvel recently revitalized the good doctor under Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo. Their first collection is Doctor Strange Vol. 1: Way of the Weird.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Coming May 5, 2017

James Gunn revealed Kurt Russell’s role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as Ego the Living Planet, one of Marvel’s strangest cosmic characters. He’s a planet with a mustache – what more can you say? In a departure from the comics, Star-Lord is revealed to be the son of Ego in the upcoming movie sequel.

Gunn doesn’t want to show any footage until the film is closer to release, but it didn’t stop him from sharing pictures on Instagram of a more comic-accurate look for Yondu and a gaggle of scoundrels known as The Ravagers. New cast members Pom Klementieff and Elizabeth Debicki were on hand as well, representing Marvel characters Mantis and Ayesha (aka Her) respectively.

Marvel’s “Agent M” (aka VP Ryan Penagos) took snapshots from the con floor of Ego’s costume when he’s human form.

What Can I Read Until Then? There are all sorts of Guardians comic collections, but of particular interest is Marvel Masterworks: Mighty Thor Vol. 5, which includes the first appearance of Ego the Living Planet during Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s classic run.

Spider-Man: Homecoming, Coming July 7, 2017

Just about the only footage that didn’t escape the con was the sizzle reel for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Word from those that were there is that the footage highlighted Peter Parker’s high school world, and the vibe was more in line with classic teen comedy than sci-fi spectacle. Our Chris Campbell has the casting breakdown, with Tony Revelori as Flash Thompson, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Laura Harrier as Liz Allan joining Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.

While there was no action scene with Michael Keaton as Vulture, they did release the first look at the character with an enticing piece of concept art.

What Can I Read Until Then? For a modern take on Spider-Man’s high school years, try the recent Spidey Vol 1: First Day.

Thor: Ragnarok, Coming November 3, 2017

Deny, deny, deny. So, maybe Marvel isn’t making a film adaptation of “Planet Hulk,” but, look, we saw Hulk’s gladiatorial armor at SDCC. So maybe it isn’t beat for beat, neither was Age of Ultron (which in no way resembles the comic of the same name). This confirms that Hulk will be fighting for his life in space, somewhere along his cosmic journey with fellow Avenger Thor.

As an appetizer, Marvel (with Ragnarok director Taika Waititi) put together a short film with Thor adapting to a new mundane life with a non-superpowered roomie. Some flashes of concept art was show to the crowds and Karl Urban took to Twitter to show off his freshly shorn head as he takes on the role of Skurge the Executioner.

Black Panther, Coming July 6, 2018

Black Panther came to SDCC with a few new casting announcements. Michael B. Jordan was confirmed as Panther villain Erik Killmonger. Killmonger is a Wakandan dissident with eyes on the Panther’s monarchy. Lupita Nyong’o will be joining Killmonger’s side as the traitorous Nakia (aka Malice). Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead’s Michonne) will play Okoye, one of the Dora Milaje. Remember T’Challa’s intimidating bald bodyguard in Captain America: Civil War? She was a Dora Milaje – ceremonial brides-in-waiting who are also formidable defenders of the Wakandan throne. Next year’s SDCC will likely have much more Black Panther to show.

What Can I Read Until Then? Black Panther by Christopher Priest: The Complete Collection Vol. 1 is a modern classic that reinvents T’Challa with edginess, action, and humor.

Captain Marvel, Coming March 8, 2019

Last but not least, Brie Larson is official! Larson (21 Jump Street, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Carol Danvers, the ace pilot whose life is changed by alien Kree technology. Her solo film is years out at this point, but her casting allows Danvers to appear in other films and post-credit stings before she gets her own spotlight.
