NBC has ‘every intention’ of putting ‘Cruel Intentions’ on the air

Cruel Intentions cast Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe

Take heart, Kathryn and Sebastian fans — NBC still has every intention of producing “Cruel Intentions” the series.

The drama, which is a continuation of the 1999 film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon, was picked up as a pilot in February 2016, later announcing that Gellar would reprise her role of Kathryn as a series regular. But “Cruel Intentions” was absent from NBC’s fall schedule, causing many to wonder if NBC was still moving ahead with it.

“It was really a space issue,” NBC’s entertainment president Jennifer Salke tells reporters at the 2016 summer TCA press tour. “We had a spot for a big, great soap and ‘This Is Us’ seemed to fit better, so we started to look for opportunities in midseason, possibly summer for the show.”

Salke also says that they’ve considered putting it on the over-the-top platform that is in the works at NBC. But wherever it lands, the reason NBC extended the pilot options for the entire cast is because “we wanted to make sure we have the show, because I’m determined to find a place to put it,” says Salke. “We wouldn’t have held that talent if we didn’t have every intention of finding an opportunity for the show.”

Salke also says that putting it online would give them “more leeway” in terms of content.

“I think there would be two versions of the show. If it ends up on some alternative platform, we would have more leeway, but it is designed to be dishy and fun and to push the envelope as far as sexuality. It’s not something we’re inviting kids in to watch.”
