Sequel Bites: 'Jurassic World 2,' 'Fast 8' and 'The Purge 4'

Jurassic World 2 Will Be Scarier, More Practical and Less Military-themed

Colin Trevorrow, director of Jurassic World and producer and co-writer of the sequel, recently appeared on the Jurassic Park fan podcast InGeneral and gave a wee bit of an update on that forthcoming follow-up. Collider transcribed the important parts, which relate to why they got someone with a horror background, namely The Orphanage helmer J.A. Bayona, to direct Jurassic World 2:

“It will be more suspenseful and scary. It’s just the way it’s designed; it’s the way the story plays out. I knew I wanted Bayona to direct it long before anyone ever heard that was a possibility, so the whole thing was just built around his skillset.”

Collider also highlights an apparent confirmation that Jurassic World 2 is not about the employment of dinosaurs in the military:

“I’m not that interested in militarized dinosaurs, at least not in practice. I liked it in theory as the pipe dream of a lunatic. When that idea was first presented to me as part of an earlier script it was something that the character that ended up being Owen was for, that he supported, something that he was actively doing even at the beginning. Derek and I, one of our first reactions was ‘No if anyone’s gonna militarize raptors that’s what the bad guy does, he’s insane.’”

Check out more highlights at Collider on how there’ll be more practical and animatronic effects in Jurassic World 2 and how his involvement is akin to that of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg’s partnership on the Indiana Jones movies, and/or listen to the podcast here.

Fast 8 Announces Release Date for First Trailer

Vin Diesel dropped an update on Fast 8 on his Facebook page this week, revealing that the first trailer for the sequel will debut on December 11. At the time, he also made a claim about the spot. “The trailer for F8 is going to blow your mind,” he wrote. “You will see why there was tension, you will understand the intensity.” That post was followed a couple days later with the teaser image above.

The Purge 4 Will Be a Prequel

If you’ve seen The Purge: Election Year, you may wonder how the horror franchise can continue on the big screen (there’s also a TV series in the works). Well, Cinema Blend talked to director James DeMonaco about the next installment, which he probably will only write and produce, and he revealed it will be a prequel:

“I would actually go back and I would try to talk about how it all started. That seems the natural next chapter in this…how did this country get to a place where we were now accepting this kind of atrocity, this terrible thing, each year? I think there’s something interesting in that. I don’t think I’ll direct, between you and I.”
