Streaming in September: The best new shows to binge across all platforms

Highlight on New Movie Released DVD

Still looking for something to do this Labor Day Weekend? One word: Binge. A new month brings a new collection of shows to watch across the various streaming platforms, and September offers up some comedy gold, the latest Marvel installation and HBO’s new feel-good series (like, feel really good).

Here are our 6 can’t-miss favorites coming to streaming in September:

‘One Mississippi,’ Amazon, Sept. 9

Death. Disease. Family. Those are the tentpoles for comedian Tig Notaro’s semiautobiographical series, which chronicles her experience heading back home to the South from California to deal with the death of her mother. Notaro puts her own brilliant, unique comedic twist on these dark times and the result is not just often funny, but quite endearing as well.

‘High Maintenance’, HBO NOW, Sept. 16

Ahead of its television debut, viewers can watch all 19 webisodes of this character-driven series that follows a nameless marijuana delivery man in New York City as he interacts with a wide variety of clients. The series originally aired on Vimeo from late 2012 to early 2015, and each webisode is between just five to 12 minutes in length. A six-episode first season premieres on HBO Sept. 16.

‘The Larry Sanders Show,’ HBO NOW, Sept. 23

Larry, Artie and “Hey Now” Hank are finally back! Garry Shandling puts his own unique spin on the inner-workings of the late night TV landscape in this TV classic. No longer are fans left to scramble to find DVD copies of this somewhat-retro-cult hit, now that the series is back in streaming form. Fans, and hopefully new fans alike, can revel once again in what was one of TV’s defining comedy series from the ’90s.

‘Transparent,’ Netflix, Sept. 23

Say goodbye to Moppa. The incomparable Maura (Jeffrey Tambor) and the rest of the beautifully dysfunctional Pfefferman family return for a third go-around of the critically acclaimed series. Season 3 will feature flashbacks to 1958, as viewers see a then-12-year-old cope with the realization that they are trapped in the wrong body.

‘Big Brother: Over The Top,’ CBS All Access, Sept. 28

CBS announced back in early August that the fall edition of “Big Brother” would be an online exclusive – the first time the show has gone all-digital. We know Julie Chen will be there, though in a different role. But will we see any past houseguests involved in some way? And what does this mean for the live feeds? So many questions. Some of those answers – here.

‘Marvel’s Luke Cage,’ Netflix, Sept. 30

The next of Marvel’s Defenders is punching his way onto the small screen when Luke Cage (Mike Colter) starts cleaning up New York City’s Harlem neighborhood. Netflix staple Mahershala Ali (“House of Cards”) stars opposite Colter as Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes,” and look for other Defenders faces to pop up, including Rosario Dawson.
