Pixar’s Cars franchise, which includes the two main features plus two spin-off Planes movies, has always taken place in an incredibly cartoon-y universe. Obviously that’s the case considering it’s filled with talking vehicles who live in a world that is clearly designed for humans and yet strangely has no humans in it, but it’s worth pointing out because it looks like Cars 3 may be leaving that cartoon-y universe behind.
Disney and Pixar still haven’t revealed an official synopsis for the new film, but they have released a teaser trailer that looks noticeably different from the other Cars films. It’s not just the aesthetics of the animation that are a departure (Pixar sequels always improve on the animation), it’s the tone. It’s a short clip, but in it we see Lightning McQueen’s red racecar body not only getting in a high-speed crash, but we also see his spoiler being ripped from his body. It actually feels impactful, like this is the vehicle equivalent of watching a person get their fingers broken.
This could all just be a dream of McQueen’s. We have no context for the clip or what ultimately causes the crash, but either way between the serious tone and a title card that promises “everything will change,” we’re suddenly very curious about what kind of movie Cars 3 will be.
