Update: Here's Where You Can See Christopher Nolan's 'Dunkirk' IMAX Footage

Update: The full list of theaters is now at the bottom of this post.

Seven minutes of footage will be revealed in the extended look at the World War II drama.

As if finally seeing the first Star Wars spin-off movie wasn’t enough, now we’re hearing that a highly anticipated blockbuster will be rolling out an extended preview at select screenings of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk promises to be a tense cinematic experience and select audiences at IMAX locations nationwide will soon be treated to a first look.

All we’ve seen of the movie so far is a 66-second teaser a few months ago.

Dunkirk is said to be a very personal movie for the British filmmaker. It’s based on the real-life story of soldiers who were surrounded by German forces in Dunkirk, France in late May and early June 1940. Belgian, British and French military units were stranded on the northern coast of France and the decision was made that they needed to be evacuated to England. It was no easy task to rescue more than 300,000 soldiers.

We’ve heard that the movie will focus on the younger soldiers holed up in Dunkirk, with the key supporting roles of commanding officers played by the likes of Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, James D’Arcy and more. Nolan has been filming the movie with an eye toward showcasing it in IMAX theaters.

The extended advance look will only be previewed in select 70mm IMAX screenings, according to SlashFilm. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be presented in 15 theaters in the 2D IMAX format and apparently it’s only in those theaters that the Dunkirk preview will be screened. The report also says that Dunkirk will feature more than 100 minutes of footage shot in the IMAX format.

Nolan remains a big advocate of shooting his movies on film rather than digital formats. Slashfilm notes that IMAX prologues for The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises were also previewed in front of other IMAX presentations ahead of their theatrical release.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will open in theaters and at IMAX locations nationwide on Friday, December 16.

Dunkirk is slated for release on July 21.
