Watch Jessica Chastain Takes on Gun Control in 'Miss Sloane' Trailer

Miss Sloane

Jessica Chastain has built an impressive career over the past few years, earning Academy Award nominations for her performances in The Help and Zero Dark Thirty while also appearing in popular blockbusters like Interstellar and The Martian. She’s starred in genre fare like Mama and Crimson Peak and is apparently open to a wide variety of projects.

Her next movie steers her back toward a collision of drama and current affairs. In Miss Sloane, Chastain plays a political lobbyist who attempts to help pass a bill on gun control. Have a look at the first trailer below.

Gun control legislation is, of course, a hot-button issue, especially in the current election climate. But the volatility of the subject matter also drives interest for certain viewers, including film critics and Academy Award members. If critics respond to the movie, that raises awareness in what can be an overcrowded season.

This is only the first teaser, yet already we can get a sense that the actress and the material are a great fit. In the opening moments, it sounds like Chastain is laying down the rules for being a lobbyist; she sounds cold and calculating and very, very good at her job. The balance of the trailer reveals that she is also driven by passion for what she’s been hired to do, the type of personality willing to risk her career for what she believes in.

Those qualities have been hallmarks of her finest performances. Her character in Zero Dark Thirty, for example, was similarly driven. If Miss Sloane delivers on the promise shown in this teaser, that bodes well for the movie and for Chastain’s acting to be recognized as award-worthy.

It also helps that the supporting cast is top-notch: Mark Strong, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Alison Pill, Michael Stuhlberg, Sam Waterston and John Lithgow. John Madden directed; his credits include Chastain’s The Debt and Shakespeare in Love, which featured Academy Award-winning performances by Gwyneth Paltrow and Judi Dench.

We’re eager to see more. Check out the poster in full below. Miss Sloane will open in theaters on December 9.
