Watch the Mysterious Trailer for Sundance Thriller 'The Discovery'

The 2017 Sundance Film Festival kicks off tomorrow, and while we wait for the buzz on what’s good and what’s not we’re starting to get first looks at some of the anticipated selections. Today Netflix dropped a trailer for its original sci-fi romance The Discovery, and if it wasn’t on your radar before, it will be after you watch.

Starring Jason Segel, Rooney Mara, Riley Keough, Jesse Plemons and Sundance founder Robert Redford in one of his alleged final acting roles, The Discovery is about a love story set in a future in which the existence of an afterlife has been proven and everybody is killing themselves to get there. It seems Segel and Mara are the coupled characters.

But that’s not entirely clear, as the trailer has nothing to offer in terms of exposition, just a lot of mysterious visuals set to Roy Orbison’s “Only the Lonely,” some of it warped to reflect the strangeness of the story. It’s the kind of movie we look forward to at Sundance, as it’s sure to be filled with more surprises.

The Discovery is written and directed by Charlie McDowell, who helmed the twisty sci-fi romance The One I Love, a Sundance ’14 premiere. If you’re not at Sundance (or SXSW, where we can assume it will go next), you can find it streaming exclusively on Netflix starting March 31.
