“You’re the Worst” dropped a bomb into the life of its main characters Wednesday (Sept. 7) when Gretchen (Aya Cash) finally got around to opening the pile of mail sitting on the dining room table and found out that Jimmy’s (Chris Geere) dad has died.

Jimmy’s relationship with his father has never been great, which is why it will effect Jimmy differently than it would someone who has a good relationship with their parents.

“It’s not just dealing with his own feelings of grief, but rather the loss of the negative driving force in his life,” creator Stephen Falk tells Zap2it. “Without a Big Bad, what is a season of ‘Buffy,’ to put it in TV viewers’ terms. In a way, he’s lost his compass, even though it was a compass of repulsion.”

When asked if perhaps viewers will see the reverse of Season 2, where it was Jimmy saving Gretchen when she spiraled into a bout of depression, and now Gretchen will be the one saving Jimmy, Falk says no. In fact, this could be devastating for their relationship.

“All Gretchen wants to do is get him to say, ‘Oh, I’m fine’ and then she’ll never talk about it again. She’s not capable of dealing with her own shit and then also being there for someone,” says Falk. “She’s probably not even capable for being there for someone in general. Maybe for a few minutes, but not in any real way. So it’s not a tables-turned situation this season.”

He adds, “It’s more about the nature in which life continues to throw shit at us. Just when we think we’re free of something, boom, something else happens. And for a relationship that’s still trying to find its feet, that can be pretty devastating. But for me, that reflects life, and I think at a certain point you either emerge from that stuff broken and irreparably damaged, or stronger. And that’s the fun, to see where they’re going to end up.”
