Musical Bites: New 'Moana' Short Film and Song, 'La La Land' May Be Heading…

Two of the most popular movies out right now are musicals, and there’s more to come from both of them! See the latest updates on Moana and La La Land below. 

New Moana Short and Song

Disney’s latest animated feature is one of their best in years, and it’s also a fine musical with catchy songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Opetaia Foa’i. If you’ve seen it and fallen in love with the title character, voiced by newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, and her demigod traveling companion, Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson, then you probably already have the soundtrack and will be picking up the Blu-ray when it comes out. That’s a good idea, because the home video release will include a bunch of deleted scenes plus a new “mini-movie” titled Gone Fishing. The latter was just teased on social media by Johnson, and it also features a new song. Check it out, and note the dates for the digital and Blu-ray releases:

La La Land On Broadway?

Having just broken the record for most Golden Globe wins by a single movie, La La Land is already the champion of this year’s awards season, and the Oscar nominations haven’t even been announced yet. The beloved musical, which is both a nostalgic throwback and a clever deconstruction of the genre, has also been making good money considering it’s not playing in a lot of theaters still. What could be next for Damien Chazelle’s tinseltown-set story? According to a Lionsgate exec, via The Hollywood Reporter, they might take the show to Broadway, or some stage. “If we want to do a stage show, we can do a stage show,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erik Feig to investors. 

Perhaps if the stage version needed extra musical material, they could pull in unused songs. Lyricist Benj Pasek revealed to Los Angeles magazine last month that at least one cut tune was eponymously titled “La La Land.” He says, “That had a lot of road metaphors in it: You don’t know where you’re going to go, but follow every turn and L.A. will lead you.” There’s been talk of a stage adaptation, as there tend to be with any true musical or musical-like movies these days. The question is whether it would translate well considering it’s so specifically about Hollywood and the ideas of movie musicals, right down to the dream ballet sequence at the end. Maybe they can turn it into a reworking of stage musicals instead?
