‘Sausage Party’ red-band trailer is the most R-rated thing ever

Highlight on New Movie Releases DVD

In many ways, American audiences are hard-wired to see animated, anthropomorphic creatures smiling back at them from a movie screen and assume they’re watching something for a kids. Boy, are they about to find out otherwise.

Seth Rogen’s “Sausage Party” has screened to good buzz at Comic-Con, and just released a so-called “red-band” trailer. For those unaware, that means the content is uncensored and safe for screening before adult-targeted movies. Still, it’s pretty jarring to see these adorable hot dog buns and potatoes (and a main character that looks eerily similar to the Wienerschnitzel mascot) dropping language that would make Andrew “Dice” Clay blush. But even more significantly: It looks really funny.

Starring the voices of such heavy-hitters as Kristen Wiig, Salma Hayek, Edward Norton and a significant portion of Rogen’s “This is the End” crew, “Sausage Party” stars Rogen as Frank, a sausage determined to find out the truth behind the existence of food products everywhere — and get with the cutest bun on the block.

Alongside friends Sammy Bagel Jr. (Norton) and Teresa Taco (Hayek), Frank makes the rule-shattering decision to expose his living, breathing self to a human. Where things go from there is anybody’s guess, but this much seems certain: We’ll never be able to look at our food quite the same.
