Sequel Buzz: 'The Secret Life of Pets,' 'Sicario' and 'Space Jam'

Want to know the latest on sequels to movies beginning with the letter ‘s’? We’ve got some news below on three upcoming follow-ups that just so happen to have an alphabetical connection, if nothing more.

The Secret Life of Pets 2

Considering how successful it’s been at the box office this summer, this surprising animated hit is indeed spawning a franchise. The studio also behind the popular Despicable Me/Minions series has set a release date for The Secret Life of Pets 2, and it’s almost exactly two years to the date after the first movie’s opening. Look forward to more dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals partying out of sight from their owners on July 13, 2018.

Sicario 2

The follow-up to Denis Villeneuve’s Oscar-nominated thriller will be very different, and not just because neither Villeneuve nor star Emily Blunt will be back. It’s also going to be focused on immigration rather than the drug war and will feature an “incredible amount of huge action sequences,” according to returning screenwriter Taylor Sheridan. Here’s another quote via Collider on just how much heavier the sequel will be:

Lionsgate understood that they bought something that was a spec [on the first film]. So there was a certain amount of latitude they had to give me [on the sequel]. What usually would be a long meeting about what’s this character about, what’s his arc—we didn’t have that. They trusted me to just go do it, and with Sicario, which I’m really proud of, it really approaches some difficult subjects. I didn’t want to demean that with the second one. So I really wrote something I double dared them to actually make. Ten times more unsentimental, more vicious and really reflective… It’s funny a lot of people think Sicario’s about the drug war and the cartels. It’s not. It’s a movie about American policy and the way that we police and [Sicario 2] is that on steroids.

Space Jam 2

The next installment of the Looney Tunes meets NBA sci-fi sports comedy will star LeBron James, who is actually also producing the sequel. But a kid asked the original’s star, Michael Jordan, for his preferred pick to pass the baton to, and the basketball legend said Blake Griffin. Perhaps the movie could now cast Griffin, maybe as one of the villain team’s players, based on the positive reaction. Check out Jordan’s answer captured via Instagram here:
