Consider Whit Stillman the hipster version of Terrence Malick. Best known for the seminal ’90s films “Metropolitan” and “Barcelona,” Stillman hasn’t directed a feature since “The Last Days of Disco” in 1998. He returns this spring with “Damsels in Distress,” a college-set comedy starring your crush du jour, Greta Gerwig. The first trailer for “Damsels” has arrived and it’s…kinda great? Kinda awful? Definitely interesting? Tough to say! Ahead, some pros and cons about the “Damsels in Distress” trailer.
PRO: Pink Sony Classics logo PRO: Greta Gerwig and Analeigh Tipton; you love them! CON: Those screaming frat guys? This isn’t a “PCU” remake, right? PRO: That thing Gerwig says about people seeking someone cooler than themselves. CON: The suicide prevention center joke. CON: The lighting around Gerwig when she’s talking about tap dancing. PRO: Aubrey Plaza! CON: “Part Woody Allen, all deadpan hilarity.” Who says that? PRO: Adam Brody! PRO: Dude is charming. CON: This kinda seems like “Clueless,” but without the satirical wit. CON: “Cocktails. Hard liqour and spirits. That’s what gives you a lift.” PRO: “Playboy operator.” PRO: DANCING! PRO: The heartbreaking way Gerwig says she’s never seen love before.
With a final tally of nine, the PROS have won! Looks like “Damsels in Distress” will be worth seeing. Probably.
“Damsels in Distress” is out in New York and Los Angeles on April 6.
